"To Wiki or Not To Wiki, That's The Question".

I was waiting on December 31st to query AI on the best safety razor blade of 2024. The answer seems quite generic to me (I am not sure it's 2024 specific). I am far from being an expert on using AI but I try to use it left and right. I have a very motivated AI-oriented colleague at work that uses AI in every sentence for the last few months. I was not able to get a demo on how he uses it, he delegated someone from his team to provide a training session in 2025 (I asked in October 2024).
What I asked AI:
If you take all the 2024 data that you can find, create a top 10 list of double-edge safety razor blades that are the most popular
Sometimes, AI gets confused and creates something that doesn't exist. See some of the answers below.
Gemini (Google)
- #9: Merkur Super Iridium: Known for their smooth and consistent shaves, these blades are a popular choice among wet shavers.
- #10 is a single-edge blade (to my knowledge): Kai Captain Platinum: Japanese-made blades that offer a very sharp and close shave.
However, Gemini had a nice disclaimer that I should share:
It's tricky to definitively say which double-edge safety razor blades were the most popular in 2024. Popularity can be measured in many ways:
- Sales Volume: This is tough to track definitively across all retailers.
- Online Search Volume: Google Trends can give some insight, but it doesn't always perfectly reflect actual purchases.
- Forums and Reviews: Online communities are passionate, but their opinions might not be representative of the broader market.
Leo AI (Brave) might be @Balin typing the answers as it said on number 5:
- GSB Blade: Ranked as a top-tier blade, GSB is preferred by many users for its excellent shaving performance.
Now, you will argue that Andrew would never place the Gillette Silver Blue on number 5. I say, it's less obvious that it's Andrew if it's right in the middle! The GSB came back a few times but I was not able to see which version any AI was referring to (Except for ChatGPT which mentioned Russia).
CoPilot (Evil Microsoft) is pulling, like Google, something that's completely unknown to me for a top 10: Bambaw Safety Razor Blades - Eco-friendly and gentle on the skin
It's even worse, that CoPilot quoted a single source for the data (A blog that I never heard of). I'm guessing it's 1 day before a big holiday so they picked the first link that seemed right and copied/pasted the blog's information (I won't copy a link since it would go against the forum rules).
Meta AI (Facebook). It's one of the best answer that I've seen in terms of how easy it is to read. I do not have any information on where the data was taken. So, I have no clue where those ratings/reviews are from!
Based on the 2024 data, here's a list of the top 10 most popular double-edge safety razor blades:
- Feather Hi-Stainless Platinum: 4.8/5 stars, 12,116 reviews
- Astra Platinum Double Edge Razor Blades: 4.7/5 stars, 8,019 reviews
- Kai Double Edge Razor Blades: 4.7/5 stars, 5,201 reviews
- Muhle Pearl Double Edge Razor Blades: 4.6/5 stars, 3,011 reviews
- Derby Extra Double Edge Razor Blades: 4.6/5 stars, 2,516 reviews
- Personna Double Edge Razor Blades: 4.5/5 stars, 2,011 reviews
- Bic Chrome Platinum Double Edge Razor Blades: 4.5/5 stars, 1,609 reviews
- 7 O'Clock Double Edge Razor Blades: 4.4/5 stars, 1,201 reviews
- Lord Double Edge Razor Blades: 4.4/5 stars, 1,011 reviews
- Shark Double Edge Razor Blades: 4.3/5 stars, 802 reviews
Please note that ratings and review numbers may vary depending on the source and methodology used. This list represents a general snapshot of the most popular double-edge safety razor blades in 2024.
Also, I do not know what a Muhle Pearl Double Edge Razor Blade is. Unless that's what you kids call the Muhle razor blade these days?
ChatGPT had an interesting entry for the Origin on number 10:
10. BIC Chrome Platinum
- Origin: France
- Characteristics: BIC Chrome Platinum blades are well-regarded for their excellent balance of sharpness and comfort. They're durable and provide a smooth shave at a reasonable price.
- Pros: Good sharpness, smooth shave, affordable.
- Cons: Not as sharp as some premium options like Feather or Kai, but still performs well.
- Best For: Budget-conscious shavers who don't want to compromise on quality.
I compiled below a quick scan of those lists (in no particular order):
- Feather
- Astra Superior Platinum
- Derby Extra
- Kai
- Gillette Silver Blue
- Personna Platinum
- Nacet
- BIC Chrome Platinum
I know there are less than 10 here but some recommendations only appeared in one AI. Maybe I should ask for 15 next time!
I made a similar list for 2024-Q1 where I manually compared 24 different sources. That can be seen here: Best Selling/recommended razor blades (2024-Q1 edition) - https://www.badgerandblade.com/forum/threads/best-selling-recommended-razor-blades-2024-q1-edition.651376/
The lists are similar. Was it faster to use AI? If I would stick to a single AI site, yes.
So, to make things more interesting. I switched Gemini to Gemini 2.0 and asked the 2024 top 10 blades for Badger and Blade.
What are the most used double-edge safety razor blades on the forum Badger and blade in 2024
Here's the integral answer:
I cannot provide a definitive, data-driven "top 10 most used" list for 2024 from Badger & Blade. I lack the ability to directly scrape and analyze forum data in real-time.
However, based on long-standing trends, consistent popularity within the wet shaving community, and anecdotal evidence from general forum discussions, here's an estimated list of 10 double-edge safety razor blades likely to be among the most frequently used on Badger & Blade in 2024:
It's crucial to understand this is an informed estimate, not a statistically proven ranking:
- Astra Superior Platinum (Russia): Consistently praised for their balance of sharpness and smoothness, Astras remain a staple and are likely very widely used.
- Gillette Silver Blue (Russia): Known for smooth, comfortable shaves, these are often considered a reliable "daily driver" and likely see frequent use.
- Personna Platinum/Lab Blues (USA): Appreciated for their smoothness and forgiveness, these are a popular choice, especially for those with sensitive skin.
- Feather (Japan): Despite their extreme sharpness not suiting everyone, Feathers are still frequently used by those seeking the closest possible shave.
- Gillette 7 O'Clock SharpEdge (Yellows/Russian Greens): Their sharpness and affordability make them a popular choice, likely contributing to high usage.
- Kai (Japan): Often compared to Feathers, Kais are known for their sharpness and are likely used by those seeking a similar experience but perhaps with slightly more smoothness.
- Gillette Nacet (Russia): These have been gaining popularity in recent years for their combination of sharpness and smoothness, likely leading to increased usage.
- Wilkinson Sword (Various origins): A classic and widely available blade, Wilkinsons likely see consistent use due to their long history and availability.
- Voskhod (Russia): Known for smoothness and forgiveness, Voskhods are a good option for those with sensitive skin and are likely used by a dedicated following.
- Perma-Sharp (Russia): These are often mentioned as a solid all-around blade with a decent balance of sharpness and smoothness, likely contributing to consistent usage.
Key Reminders:
- This is an approximation: Actual usage may vary.
- "Most used" doesn't equal "best": Popularity doesn't necessarily indicate superiority.
- Subjectivity is paramount: Blade preference is highly individual.
To get more accurate data, you would need to analyze forum data directly, which I cannot do. The best way to get a real sense of what's currently popular on Badger & Blade is to engage with the forum directly: search for relevant threads, participate in discussions, and look for polls or surveys.
