The Newcastle Red Bulls are facing a challenging start to their season, with head coach Alan Dickens expressing his desire for a 'fast forward' button to accelerate their progress. They are also a result of the club's transition period, having undergone a takeover by Red Bull just a few months ago. Dickens explained, "Every day, we're working on building that team cohesion." However, he added, "We want to fast-forward and achieve that cohesion as soon as possible."
The challenge is twofold: not only are they trying to bridge the gap to the other Prem sides, but they are also integrating players from diverse backgrounds, including New Zealand, South Africa, Australia, Argentina, Japan, and Britain. Developing on-field chemistry in such a short time is no easy feat, as evidenced by the Red Bulls fielding debutants in each of their first three league games.
And this is the part most people miss... Newcastle is looking to emulate the success of clubs like Northampton Saints, who have a well-established pathway for developing young talent through their academy system. Saints, for instance, included 11 academy players in their starting lineup against Leicester Tigers, including four British and Irish Lions.
"Red Bull's long-term vision is well-known here. They want to build a strong foundation through an academy system," Dickens said. "Northampton is a great example of a club that has successfully implemented this model, performing consistently well in the academy leagues."
Dickens, who has firsthand experience with Northampton's transformation, understands the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. "It's a process that takes time, with its fair share of ups and downs. We're playing catch-up, and we need to close that gap quickly."
